Carbon Stocks in Compartments of Soil Organic Matter 31 Years after Substitution of Native Cerrado Vegetation by Agroecosystems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ferreira,Eloisa Aparecida Belleza; Bustamante,Mercedes Maria da Cunha; Resck,Dimas Vital Siqueira; Figueiredo,Cícero Célio de; Pinto,Alexandre de Siqueira; Malaquias,Juaci Vitória.
ABSTRACT Changes in carbon stocks in different compartments of soil organic matter of a clayey Latossolo Vermelho Distrófico (Typic Haplustox), caused by the substitution of native savanna vegetation (cerrado sensu stricto) by agroecosystems, were assessed after 31 years of cultivation. Under native vegetation, a stock of 164.5 Mg ha-1 C was estimated in the 0.00-1.00 m layer. After 31 years of cultivation, these changes in soil C stocks were detected to a depth of 0.60 m. In the case of substitution of cerrado sensu stricto by no-tillage soybean-corn rotation, a reduction of at least 11 % of the soil C pools was observed. However, the adoption of no-tillage as an alternative to tillage with a moldboard plow (conventional system) reduced CO2 emissions by...

Conservation Agriculture in Trouble? Estimating the Economic Impact of an Eventual Glyphosate Prohibition in Spain Planta Daninha
PARDO,G.; MARTÍNEZ,Y..
ABSTRACT: Weed control is a crucial aspect in many conservation agriculture systems given that costs and time savings from avoiding tillage are closely linked to the use of effective and environmental friendly herbicides. This has led to the widespread use of glyphosate in farms, as it is a broad-spectrum, easily degradable, low- cost herbicide. The recent debate on the safety of glyphosate and on the excessive use of chemical herbicides in food production has caused concern on farmers about the possible economic effects of a virtual ban on glyphosate. The aim of this paper is to estimate the costs associated with an eventual prohibition of glyphosate in Spanish conservation agriculture areas. The costs of different alternative weed control strategies for...

Contribution of macroporosity to water flux of a soil under different tillage systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Soracco,Carlos Germán; Lozano,Luis Alberto; Balbuena,Roberto; Ressia,Juan Manuel; Filgueira,Roberto Raúl.
In view of the importance of the macroporosity for the water transport properties of soils, its quantitative assessment is a challenging task. Measurements of hydraulic conductivity (K) at different soil water tensions and the quantification of water-conducting macropores (θM) of a soil under different tillage systems could help understand the effects on the soil porous system and related hydraulic properties. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of Conventional Tillage (CT), Chisel Plow (CP) and No Tillage (NT) on θM and on K; and to quantify the contribution of macroporosity to total water flux in a loam soil. A tension disc infiltrometer was used at two soil water pressure heads (-5 cm, and 0) to infer θM and K, during fallow....

Conversion of cerrado into agricultural land in the south-western Amazon: carbon stocks and soil fertility Scientia Agricola
Carvalho,João Luís Nunes; Carlos Eduardo Pelegrino,Cerri; Feigl,Brigitte Josefine; Píccolo,Marisa de Cássia; Godinho,Vicente de Paula; Herpin,Uwe; Cerri,Carlos Clemente.
Land use change and land management practices can modify soil carbon (C) dynamics and soil fertility. This study evaluated the effect of tillage systems (no-tillage - NT and conventional tillage - CT) on soil C and nutrient stocks in an Oxisol from an Amazonian cerrado following land use change. The study also identified relationships between these stocks and other soil attributes. Carbon, P, K, Ca and Mg stocks, adjusted to the equivalent soil mass in the cerrado (CE), were higher under NT. After adoption of all but one of the NT treatments, C stocks were higher than they were in the other areas we considered. Correlations between C and nutrient stocks showed positive correlations with Ca and Mg under NT due to continuous liming, higher crop residue...

Effects of different management systems on porosity of oxisols in Paraná, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Tavares Filho,João; Tessier,Daniel.
Soils play a fundamental role in the production of human foods. The Oxisols in the state of Paraná are among the richest and most productive soils in Brazil, but degradation and low porosity are frequently documented, due to intensive farming involving various management strategies and the application of high-tech solutions. This study aims to investigate changes in the porosity of two Red Oxisols (Latossolos Vermelhos), denoted LVef (eutroferric) and LVdf (dystroferric) under conventional and no-tillage soil management, with a succession of annual crops of soybean, maize and wheat over a continuous period of more than 20 years. After describing the soil profiles under native forest, no-tillage management and conventional tillage using the crop profile...

Forms of inorganic phosphorus in soil under different long term soil tillage systems and winter crops Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Tiecher,Tales; Santos,Danilo Rheinheimer dos; Kaminski,João; Calegari,Ademir.
The cultivation of crops with different capacity of P uptake and use under long-term soil tillage systems can affect the distribution of P cycling and inorganic forms in the soil, as a result of higher or lower use efficiency of P applied in fertilizers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term cultivation of different winter species under tillage systems on the distribution of inorganic P forms in the soil. In 1986, the experiment was initiated with six winter crops (blue lupin, hairy vetch, oat, oilseed radish, wheat and fallow) on a Rhodic Hapludox in southwestern Paraná, under no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT). The application of phosphate fertilizer in NT rows increased inorganic P in the labile and moderately...

Gas chromatography and photoacoustic spectroscopy for the assessment of soil greenhouse gases emissions Ciência Rural
Nicoloso,Rodrigo da Silveira; Bayer,Cimélio; Denega,Genuir Luis; Oliveira,Paulo Armando Victória de; Higarashi,Martha Mayumi; Corrêa,Juliano Corulli; Lopes,Letícia dos Santos.
Assessments of soil carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are critical for determination of the agricultural practices' potential to mitigate global warming. This study evaluated the photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) for the assessment of soil greenhouse gases (GHG) fluxes in comparison to the standard gas chromatography (GC) method. Two long-term experiments with different tillage and cropping systems over a Paleudult were evaluated using static chambers. PAS measurements of CO2 and N2O concentrations showed good relationship and linearity (R2=0.98 and 0.94, respectively) with GC results. However, CH4 measurements were significantly affected by air sample moisture which interfered on CH4 detection by PAS. Overestimation of...

Impacto do sistema de plantio direto na diversidade de espécies de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares nativos em solo de cerrado. Infoteca-e
MIRANDA, J. C. C. de; MIRANDA, L. N. de.
ABSTRACT: The no-till and conventional cropping systems, which involve low and high soil disturbance, could affect the number and nature of native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi species in the soil. These, on the other hand, determine the contribution of arbuscular mycorrhiza on crop responses to used inputs and on the efficiency of the planting system itself, as they have different efficiency levels towards the same host plant. Though, the same total number of species and the same species themselves of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, were observed in the no-till and conventional cropping systems. Nevertheless, the no-till system practice is recommended, as the mycorrhizal external mycelium, developed during the former cropping, is preserved and stimulates the...

Impacts of different management systems on the physical quality of an Amazonian Oxisol Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Guedes,Elaine Maria Silva; Fernandes,Antonio Rodrigues; Lima,Herdjania Veras de; Serra,Ademar Pereira; Costa,José Ribamar; Guedes,Rafael da Silva.
The physical quality of Amazonian soils is relatively unexplored, due to the unique characteristics of these soils. The index of soil physical quality is a widely accepted measure of the structural quality of soils and has been used to specify the structural quality of some tropical soils, as for example of the Cerrado ecoregion of Brazil. The research objective was to evaluate the physical quality index of an Amazonian dystrophic Oxisol under different management systems. Soils under five managements were sampled in Paragominas, State of Pará: 1) a 20-year-old second-growth forest (Forest); 2) Brachiaria sp pasture; 3) four years of no-tillage (NT4.); 4) eight years of no-tillage (NT8); and 5) two years of conventional tillage (CT2). The soil samples were...
